Handgrip strength in Argentine adults: analysis by age, sex, and functional performance
Main Article Content
Abstract
Handgrip strength is a simple and reproducible indicator of muscle function and represents the first criterion for sarcopenia detection according to the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 (EWGSOP2). However, the use of international cut-off points may not adequately reflect the characteristics of local populations.
This observational cross-sectional study included 505 adults (≥18 years) living in Rosario, Argentina. Handgrip strength was measured using hydraulic dynamometry following a standardized protocol, recording the highest value of three attempts in both upper limbs. Differences according to sex and laterality, correlations with age and functional performance (sit-to-stand test), and the SARC-F questionnaire in a subgroup were evaluated.
Dominant handgrip strength was higher in men than in women and greater than non-dominant strength in both sexes. Strength showed a negative correlation with age and sit-to-stand performance. Only a small proportion of participants were below EWGSOP2 cut-off values.
These findings provide relevant local data on handgrip strength in Argentine adults and highlight the importance of interpreting international cut-off points according to demographic characteristics of the evaluated population.
