Abstract

Thyroid ablation using radiofrequency and microwave energy has emerged as a minimally invasive alternative for managing benign and, in selected cases, malignant thyroid nodules. In Latin America, clinical experience and published data remain limited, and local evidence on efficacy and safety is scarce.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of radiofrequency and microwave ablation techniques in thyroid nodules treated at an Argentine university hospital. Eight patients with benign and malignant thyroid nodules underwent radiofrequency or microwave ablation at the Hospital de Clínicas José de San Martín and were followed clinically and by ultrasound for at least six months.

All patients showed a reduction in nodule volume comparable to international reports. Complications were minor and transient.

These techniques proved to be effective and safe minimally invasive procedures for selected thyroid nodules, although larger studies with longer follow-up are needed.
